IATF 16949 Automotive Quality Management System

IATF 16949, fully named "Quality Management System Requirements for Organizations in the Automotive Production and Relevant Service Parts Industry," was jointly drafted by the automotive industrial departments of Italy, the United States, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. It was developed by the national automotive associations (ANFIA, AIAG, CCFA, FIEV, SMMT, and VDA) under the International Automotive Task Force (IATF).

IATF 16949 is a globally recognized automotive quality management system standard. Its core principles and requirements aim to ensure that automotive manufacturers and suppliers establish and maintain a consistent quality management system.

The full name of IATF 16949 is the Automotive Industry Quality Management System Certification. IATF 16949 is an international technical specification for the automotive industry, based on ISO 9001 with the addition of automotive industry technical specifications. This specification is fully aligned with ISO 9001:2015 but places greater emphasis on defect prevention and reducing quality fluctuations and waste commonly generated in the automotive parts supply chain.

The IATF 16949:2016 standard was released on October 1, 2016, marking a significant milestone in the development of automotive industry management system standards. Standards are generally revised every 6 to 8 years.

The TS 16949:2009 standard was an automotive management system standard based on ISO 9001:2008. With the release of the ISO 9001:2015 version, ISO/TS 16949 was officially renamed IATF 16949.
