How to maintain polycarbonate sheet carports?
Nowadays, most car and bicycle shelters opt for steel-framed polycarbonate sheet canopies. In the southern regions, continuous heavy rain and the plum rain season cause outdoor polycarbonate sheet shelters to develop moss and similar growths on their surfaces, severely affecting the canopy's light transmission and aesthetics. Additionally, moss can corrode the polycarbonate sheets, reducing their lifespan. So, how should we maintain polycarbonate sheet carports? Below, we discuss the precautions for cleaning polycarbonate sheets.
Cleaning and maintenance of PC structural sheets: Small area cleaning: Rinse with warm water; use neutral soap or household detergent mixed with warm water for rinsing, and use soft cloths or sponges to remove dust and dirt; rinse with cold water and wipe dry with a soft cloth to remove water stains after drying. Large area cleaning: Use a water hose; any additives in the water should be compatible with PC sheets. Cleaning precautions: Do not sand or clean PC sheets with strong alkalis; avoid using dry, hard cloths or stiff brushes on the surface to prevent scratching. Do not use butyl cellosolve solutions to clean UV-resistant PC sheets.

Polycarbonate sheet product characteristics:
(1) Light transmission: PC sheets can achieve up to about 89% light transmittance, comparable to glass. UV-coated sheets do not easily yellow, fog, or lose transparency when exposed to sunlight; after ten years, light transmittance loss is about 10%, while PVC loss rates reach 15–20%, and fiberglass about 12–20%.
(2) Impact resistance: Impact strength is about 250–300 times that of ordinary glass, about 30 times that of acrylic sheets of the same thickness, and about 2–20 times that of tempered glass, earning it the nicknames "unbreakable glass" and "sounding steel."
(3) UV protection: One side of the PC sheet is co-extruded with an anti-UV coating, while the other side has anti-condensation treatment, combining UV resistance, thermal insulation, and anti-fogging functions. It blocks ultraviolet rays, making it suitable for protecting valuable artworks and exhibits from UV damage.
(4) Lightweight: Density is about half that of glass, reducing costs for transportation, handling, installation, and support frameworks.
(5) Flame retardant: According to standard GB50222—95, PC sheets are classified as flame-retardant (B1 grade). The self-ignition point of PC sheets is about 580°C; they self-extinguish after removal from fire and do not produce toxic gases or contribute to the spread of flames when burning.
(6) Bendability: Can be cold-bent on-site according to design drawings into arches, semicircular roofs, and windows. The bending radius is about 175 times the sheet thickness; hot bending is also possible.
(7) Sound insulation: PC sheets provide significant sound insulation, offering better acoustic insulation than glass or acrylic sheets of the same thickness. Under the same thickness conditions, PC sheets improve sound insulation by about 5–9 dB compared to glass, making them the preferred material for highway sound barriers.
(8) Energy efficiency: Cool in summer and warm in winter, PC sheets have a lower thermal conductivity (K-value) than ordinary glass and other plastics, with insulation effects 7–25% higher than equivalent glass. PC sheets can achieve up to about 49% thermal insulation, greatly reducing heat loss, making them suitable for buildings with heating systems.
(9) Temperature adaptability: PC sheets do not become brittle at -40°C and do not deform at 125°C, maintaining stable mechanical and physical properties even in harsh environments.
(10) Weather resistance: PC sheets can maintain stable physical indicators within a range of about -40°C to 120°C. After 4000 hours of artificial weathering tests, yellowing degree is 2, and light transmittance reduction is about 0.6%.
(11) Anti-condensation: At an outdoor temperature of 0°C and indoor temperature of 23°C, with indoor relative humidity below about 80%, the inner surface of the material does not condense. Condensation flows along the surface of the sheet without dripping.
