It is primarily used as a high-boiling-point solvent in paints, particularly nitrocellulose lacquers, quick-drying paints, varnishes, enamels, and paint removers. It also serves as an inactive diluent in adhesives, a metal cleaner, a paint stripper, a fiber wetting agent, a pesticide dispersant, a pharmaceutical extractant, and a resin plasticizer.
