Headspace Sampler

The headspace sampler is a convenient and efficient sample handling method in gas chromatography. Its principle involves placing the sample to be tested into a sealed container, heating it to allow volatile components to evaporate from the sample matrix, reaching equilibrium between the gas and liquid (or gas and solid) phases. The top gas is then directly extracted for chromatographic analysis to determine the composition and content of volatile components in the sample. Using headspace sampling technology eliminates lengthy and cumbersome sample preparation processes, avoids interference from organic solvents in analysis, and reduces contamination of the chromatographic column and injection port. This instrument can be connected to various models of gas chromatographs, both domestic and international.

I. Manual Injection (Oven or Water Bath Method)

1. Sample is heated to reach thermal equilibrium.

2. Sample is extracted using a syringe.

3. Quickly transferred to the gas chromatograph for injection and analysis.

II. Gas-Tight Syringe Injection

1. Sample is heated to reach thermal equilibrium.

2. Sample is extracted using a heated gas-tight syringe.

3. Moved to the gas chromatograph for injection and analysis.

III. Balanced-Pressure System

1. Sample is heated to reach thermal equilibrium.

2. Carrier gas is introduced through a conduit to pressurize the system.

3. Sample is introduced along with the carrier gas for analysis.

IV. Pressure-Loop System

1. Sample is heated to reach thermal equilibrium.

2. Pressure is applied to introduce the sample into the sample loop.

3. A valve directs the sample into the transfer channel for injection.
