Geranium (scientific name: Pelargonium hortorum ), also known as zonal pelargonium, horseshoe geranium, or garden geranium, belongs to the Geraniaceae family, comprising approximately 230 species of perennial succulent, subshrub, or shrub plants. Native to southern Africa, geraniums are widely cultivated around the world.

Young geranium plants are succulent herbs, while older plants become semi-woody; in the West, they are popular flowers for decorating windowsills, particularly common in European countries such as Germany and Austria.
