Grapefruit essential oil is a yellow to yellow-green, sometimes reddish volatile oil that may precipitate waxy substances during storage. It exhibits a citrus aroma. Soluble in most non-volatile oils and mineral oils, often appearing milky or flocculent; slightly soluble in propylene glycol; insoluble in glycerol. Grapefruit essential oil is very common in aromatherapy.

It is extracted from the peel of the grapefruit (Citrus paradisi), not the pulp or flesh. Like other citrus fruits, grapefruit essential oil is obtained through cold pressing.

GB 2760—96: Permitted food flavor. Mainly used in soft drinks, jams, jellies, candies, and to enhance the aroma of lemon, orange, and other flavors.
